Songs for Mrs. Hudson
Words: 645

“So, what shall we do now, my dears?” asked Mrs. Hudson brightly, looking around the sitting room of her flat at the others who were variously drinking, eating cake, or examining the assortment of gifts—fancy teas, wrapped fruitcakes, a scarf, and a lovely silver teapot—sitting in a nest of torn wrapping paper and ribbons.

John came out of the kitchen with a tray full of munchies, which he set on the coffee table. “Well, Mrs. Hudson, it’s your birthday, so it’s up to you!” he said happily. John really enjoyed social gatherings, even among ill-assorted groups. Not that they were that, of course: himself, Lestrade, Molly, Mrs. Hudson, and Mike Stamford made up the remnants of the celebration, the other guests having departed, including Sherlock, who flounced out after dropping off an elegantly-wrapped gift which had turned out to be the silver teapot.

Lestrade took a pull of his beer. “Be nice to have some music, maybe?”

“I’ve got that,” chirped Mrs. Hudson, bustling out of the room and returning shortly with a boom box and a box of CDs. Mike arose to help her set it up, as Molly said eagerly, “I know, we used to do this at Uni, play DJ, take turns choosing songs. P’raps since it’s your birthday, Mrs. Hudson, we can choose songs in your honor!” Mike turned from where he was digging in the box of CDs. “Right, I’m on it!’ he said triumphantly, putting in a CD and pushing PLAY. Martha My Dear - The Beatles.

“Bit easy, but lovely song for a lovely lady,” nodded John, putting in his choice and bowing toward their hostess. "How's this?" Mrs. Hudson blushed with pleasure at the opening notes of She’s Always a Woman to Me - Billy Joel.

Lestrade chose You Make Me Feel So Young - Frank Sinatra and cajoled Mrs. Hudson into a brief two-step.

Molly was squinting at the album covers, then her eyes lit up. As Floridays - Jimmy Buffett began to play, she looked brightly at Mrs. Hudson. “Because you lived in Florida, right? I bet you have some wonderful memories.” Mrs. Hudson smiled vaguely and patted her shoulder.  “Yes, indeed, dear.” Her eyes had a faraway look. “But I think this one might be more appropriate for that time of my life.” Suddenly impish, she started singing along to Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon. “This was a bit of a laugh between Sherlock and me,” she confided, “We’d sing it, ‘Get him convicted to death, Seth.’” She let out a peal of laughter, as the others exchanged puzzled or uncomfortable glances.

The songs played on. Mike chose Tea and Toast - Lucy Spraggan, while extolling his love for The X Factor. Lestrade winked as he played Hips Don’t Lie - Shakira, doing a bit of a shimmy as Mrs. Hudson again blushed and watched avidly. John pulled up YouTube on his mobile and produced the very odd The Landlady Song - Antje Duvekot. “Just for the title, yeah?” he shrugged.

As the last twangs of Roll Another Number (For the Road) - Neil Young faded out (it had been another of Mrs. Hudson’s choices, again reducing her to giggles and leaving the others looking puzzled, or uncomfortably knowing), Sherlock appeared in the doorway, brandishing his iPhone with the air of someone who had perhaps been skulking just outside. “Ridiculous, all of this, your choices are so pedestrian,” he practically snarled. “There is only one song that can truly be said to represent the marvel that is our Mrs. Martha Hudson.” With a flourish he hooked up the phone, pressed a button, and raised his arms dramatically to the opening salvo of There’ll Always Be An England -Vera Lynn. Molly clapped, Sherlock conducted, Mike nodded, Lestrade and John raised their glasses, and Mrs. Hudson folded her hands and looked delighted.
