For [livejournal.com profile] queer_theory. Not necessarily songs Dan himself would like, but in tribute to him and his Sports Night life.

Dan RydellDan Rydell 2

1  New York, New York (Frank Sinatra)
Dan: Casey slept in his office and I’m having a New York Renaissance.

2  Rosa Parks (Outkast)
Isaac: And because I love you, I can say this: no rich young white guy has ever gotten anywhere with me comparing himself to Rosa Parks. Got it?
Dan: Yes sir.
Isaac: Good.

3  Afternoon Delight (The Starland Vocal Band)
Casey: What's up with me not being cool?
Dan: What IS up with that?
Casey: I love music! I have a great appreciation of music.
Dan: Dude, I've been in your car! You've got the Starland Vocal Band singing "Afternoon Delight."

4  Sloop John B (The Beach Boys)
Dan: There's really nothing like seeing a guy realize he's not done yet. It usually goes the other way.

5  Eli’s Coming (Three Dog Night)
Dan: Eli is something bad, a darkness.
Casey: "Eli's coming. Hide your heart, girl." Eli is a inveterate womanizer. I think you're getting the song wrong.
Dan: I know I'm getting the song wrong. But, when I first heard it, that's what I thought it meant. Things stick with you that way.

6  Quit Playing Games with My Heart (Backstreet Boys)
Dan: The high-water mark was when I was mistaken for a Backstreet Boy. Is there a Backstreet Boy I look like?
Jeremy: Yeah.
Dan: Which one?
Jeremy: That... guy.

7  Finland Song (Eric Idle)
Dan: Why are we quoting high-level sources inside the Swiss Olympic Committee on Helsinki's bid for the 2010 Olympics?
Dana: What's the problem?
Dan: Helsinki's in Finland.
Dana: Are you sure?
Dan: Am I sure that Helsinki's in Finland? Yeah. I'm quite sure.

8  How are Things in Glocca Morra? (Sonny Rolllins)
Isaac: I have a comprehensive command of American musicals.
Dan: That's great, listen...
Isaac: Name a song.
Dan: I don't really...
Isaac: Name a damn song.
Dan: How are Things in Glocca Morra?
[Long silence]
Isaac: Damn, that's gonna bug the hell out of me.

9  Happy Birthday (Mr. Rogers)
Not the more common version, since I didn’t want us to have to pay the estate of Patty and Mildred Hill. Plus. Mr. Rogers.

10 Who Are You (Tom Waits)
When I was looking for songs, I came across this rec from my old pal and fellow Sports Night fan, [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum, whom we lost to cancer this year. (She's written some lovely Dan fic, by the way.) As she said, to another's inquiry: “My #1 Dan Rydell song will always be Tom Wait's Who Are You  - I think it's the line about I fell in love with your sailor's mouth and your wounded eyes that does it, Danny being King of the Woobies.” So, this is for her.
