My Fandom Crushes

#1. Battle Creek--Russ Agnew
Detective-Russ-Agnew-battle-creek-38171929-200-200
He's tough but tender, worn down but still hopeful. He's had a rough life but is a survivor. He's a hometown boy, and decided to be a cop for his hometown, so everywhere he goes he has good and bad connections. He's kind of trapped in a world where everyone knows him from grade school, but he works it to his advantage (sometimes). He's rumpled and hilarious.

#2.Game of Thrones--Margaery Tyrell
4beb24a07609f395174790c46fb9f35c_300x200
She's smart and ambitious, and knows how to use her born role in society to her advantage. She works her femininity but is subtle, or at least subtle in a way that only another wily woman can recognize her intent. We don't know if she will ultimately succeed in her goals, but I'm rooting for her, because she's one of those characters in this particular world that knows what's going on and how to work it.

#3. Castle--Rick Castle
Rick-Castle-Castle_gallery_primary

He's sharp, witty, and sees the humor in most situations. But he can be deep and real when it's needed, such as when he's supporting his daughter. He's somewhat amoral, a hedonist, but he's also deeply ethical in human relationships. He knows he makes mistakes and he owns up to them. He can also draw the line, such as in his relationship with Beckett. He's a family man but can also be a party animal. He has a zest for life that is infectious.

So this comes to me from [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum. Why I don't usually do these, is, while I think of myself as a reasonably interesting person in real life, online I find I am rather dull. But, anyway. Onward!

SIX NAMES YOU GO BY:
1. Cathy
2. CK, that's how I sign my emails, cards, other things
3. [livejournal.com profile] catko
4. ccatko, when the above is unavailable. Yes, both names seem rather silly to me now, but when I joined these sites, little did I know how much I'd be using them.
5. cko. I know, horribly unoriginal. But if you think those are bad, my youtube name is......
6. catjackod. Which yes, I know what that looks like. I swear, I was registering, and it kept saying "add another letter, add another letter" so this is where it ended up. You hush,[livejournal.com profile] blue_sunflowers .

THREE THINGS YOU ARE WEARING RIGHT NOW:
1. Laptop. My trusty, can't hardly imagine a day without it Macbook.
2. DC Shoes t-shirt, because at one time I had a little passion for skateboarder Rob Dyrdek, and he promotes this company.
3. Glasses. Ever since I was 8 years old.

THREE THINGS YOU WANT VERY BADLY AT THE MOMENT
1. Spring
2. I'll echo [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum  and say, no more cancer on the planet.
3. Is it wrong to say...an iPad?

THREE PEOPLE WHOM YOU HOPE WILL DO THE MEME
1. [livejournal.com profile] blue_sunflowers , because she doesn't ever do these things.
2. [livejournal.com profile] utility_knife , because we miss him.
3. [livejournal.com profile] claudiapriscus , ditto, but she's a her.

THREE THINGS YOU DID LAST NIGHT
1. Searched Sorkin shows for screencaps for the most recent [livejournal.com profile] sorkinverse challenge. Fun stuff!
2. Chatted with [livejournal.com profile] weaselsnout , [livejournal.com profile] blue_sunflowers , kathyk, [livejournal.com profile] dutch_evilalex , [livejournal.com profile] duhhhrama --wow, I'm popular.
3. Baked dark rye rolls.

THREE PEOPLE YOU LAST TALKED TO ON THE PHONE:
The phone?????

THREE THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO DO TOMORROW:

...it made me think, so. This was my response to a post by [livejournal.com profile] weaselsnout ; I'm reposting on my journal to see if I still agree with myself next week. Here goes:

I put off commenting on the Faith one because I realize I have no clue what I think about that.

Ditto here, but I have to jump in, anyway. I also believe that life is finite and without larger purpose.

But those of us who are here are here. We have survival drives that include the basics (food, sex, shelter). But research is showing that more "positive" instincts are also basic drives. Nurturance obviously (no, I don't have much of that either, but it's good some of us do), compassion, cooperation--are just as crucial to the survival of the species as killing for food or taking territory from other beings. Some people argue that our brains created the notion of "God" to keep us doing things that might be difficult but are ultimately essential to our survival. So, valuing "life", giving blood to a stranger, the Golden Rule.

Sure, that's all gotten warped out of proportion with the idea that a bundle of cells is "Life" or that God wants us to kill those not like us.

Comes down to, yeah, if you're not willing to take a pre-packaged version, you gotta figure it out for yourself. Might take a lifetime, but what else you doing? Playing video games?

And if you don't believe in an afterlife, you don't gotta worry about what that's going to be. But...uh...just in case, bring water. [/reaper]

You think this is a crisis? I just figured out this week that I DO believe in love, after all. Damn it.

This is from Facebook, of course, but I thought I'd post it here with a few edits just for...

...and also the day Joe Strummer died, which I commemorated here. But I'm also loving this band, The Gaslight Anthem, who have a song that's a tribute to Joe: I'da Called You Woody, Joe.  Lyrics below.

The great comic and social commentator. He had lots of stuff to say. He was vehemently opposed to the War on Drugs, and I liked this bit:

"Wouldn't you like to see a positive LSD story on the news? To hear what it's all about, perhaps? Wouldn't that be interesting? Just for once?

"'Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration — that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather.'"

Oh, not that I'm pro-drug. Just pro-honesty.

If you don't know him, it's worth finding out. If you do, give him a thought, or a laugh.

Great Song

I'm listening to this song over and over again. Not the kind of music I usually prefer--I guess you'd call it folk? singer-songwriter?--but it's so beautiful, sad and hopeful. Thanks, CP, for telling me about this. It's true, it does say it all about how life could be easier, or get tough. Strangely comforting. Plus, good for a nice cry.

(lost the video, but it's Easier by Joe Purdy
is it gonna get easier
is it gonna get tough
are the waters gonna open wider
or are they gonna get rough
are we gonna have to sink right down
are we gonna get to paint this town
deep blue and green, the colors of your eyes lookin at me
early in the morning.

Doug, Tom, Terry, Randy, Roberto, Miguel, AJ, and so many more. Even though I don't believe in heaven, I'm sure you're all up there having one hell of a party. Miss you.

Today is Joe Strummer's Birthday.

Funny thing, he died on my birthday. That day is commemorated here. I'd love to see that mural sometime: Niagara Bar, 112 7th and Avenue A, NY. Like in the video, I remember seeing lots of people wearing Clash t-shirts. We went to a Clash-themed place for breakfast (yes) and they were playing, I think, London Calling, and a man in the next booth said to his son, who looked around 9--"That guy singing, he's Joe Strummer. He died today."

You felt like you were part of a (big) club. Still do. He's one of my (few) heroes.

From a tribute site

"When he played at the Troubador, before he walked off the stage he said 'It's a sad and beautiful world! Goodnight!'

If you don't know, find out more about him.
