Fun challenge at
womenverse to interview a favorite character. I chose to use the so-named Proust Questionnaire as done by Vanity Fair magazine. I've always liked this short, sometimes profound, often silly, format.
The Proust Questionnaire: Martha Rodgers
Vanity Fair is thrilled that this month’s Proust Questionnaire Interview is with Martha Rodgers, currently appearing in the Matrix Theater’s production of The Winter’s Tale, and also mother to famed mystery writer, Richard Castle.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Standing in the wings of a theater, ANY theater, ready to step on in my role. ANY role.
What is your greatest fear?
That any of my loved ones should pre-decease me.
Which living person do you most admire?
I have great admiration for Hillary Clinton. Everything she has had to put up with, as a woman in leadership, and yet she sails bravely forward.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Vanity.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Modesty.
What do you dislike most about your appearance?
Not applicable!
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Every love of my life was the greatest love of my life…for a time.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I wish I’d had more skill as a dancer. It would have broadened my career.
What is your current state of mind?
Perfectly content, my dear.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Can I shave off a few years?
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
Not a blessed thing.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Speaking of. My fantastic son and magnificient grand-daughter.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
I must admit it. Charm.
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Moxie.
Who are your favorite writers?
Neeed you ask? Of course, Richard Castle.
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
She’s based on a real person, Marion Tanner, but her fictionalized version is Auntie Mame. She’s marvelous, she’s meddling, she is purely herself and no-one else.
Who are your heroes in real life?
Ah, at present the person who springs to mind is my son’s fiancee, Detective Kate Beckett and her colleagues. They put their lives on the line for the City of New York, every day.
What is it that you most dislike?
Meannness.
How would you like to die?
The last curtain call, to a standing ovation, just as the curtain falls.
What is your motto?
“Darling, if you’re going to do something, do it big, or don’t do it at all.”
