catko: (aa NY liberty)

Had a date to meet really_mzungu (Laurel) up near the American Museum of Natural History, so popped down to the subway, and as I was grabbing the A train, I thought, proudly, "Hey, I guess the A is kind of 'my' train." Sadly, it was the express, and it zoomed right past my stop, so I had to get off at 125th and double back on the B to 86th Street. Apparently I wasn't the only one, because these two women seated next to me were saying, in Japanese I think, something about "A, no, no, B" while pointing repeatedly at a subway map.

One of my favorite parts of these daily excursions is popping out of the subway station and looking around, seeing what the new area is like. This station is right on Central Park, so just lovely, as was the stroll over on 86th to Columbus. Met Laurel outside; we made these arrangements on Twitter, and I told her I'd be wearing black and a $5 pashmina. Joe the Art of Coffee had a great, strong coffee smell, and we had a good time sitting on the bench out front, talking about fandom, Reaper, music, and life in general. She walked me down to the Museum and gave me some tips, including that the admission price of $16 is just "suggested" and you can pay less if you want. I coughed up $24 anyway, including the Planetarium show, because I love those, though frankly I kind of regretted it, since it was less than 30 minutes long, and narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, whom I usually like but her voice wasn't quite right for this. There was one great thing. As we were herded into the "Pre Show Waiting Area" receiving our instructions for fliing into the show (kind of regimented, considering!) the voice told us: "Remember, every seat provides an equal view of the Universe." Heh, words to live by.

Anyway, the Museum is a fun mix of very up-to-date, with all the space stuff and the amazing Hall of Biodiversity, and really old fashioned, with the dusty dioramas. (Oh, my gosh, this is suddenly reminding me of a discussion we had on the Reaper TWoP boards about this very museum. Little did I know then I'd be visiting here now.)

"Rotation of Crops in Dutchess County, New York" and "Peter Stuyvesant Meeitng Hackensack Indians"

Wandered around the neighborhood, on Amsterdam near 72nd. Ate a Luxemburger at the famous Cafe Luxembourg; felt so worldly eating at 3 pm. More Crumbs cupcakes, and it's official: the cupcakes now cost MORE than the pashminas.

Loved the 72nd Street station. C line home. I swear, I think the subway is my favorite part of this vacation.

Oh, and I wish this photo had come out, but I was taking the picture surreptitiously. On the B train, I saw this couple, and she looked like an elf and he looked like a hobbit! With tattoos and piercings, however.
