catko: (aa NY sunflowers)
[personal profile] catko

Started the day realizing I'd cracked the mug I got at MoMA and that the sunflowers Lori and I bought for the party were wilted beyond revival, and that it probably wasn't "worth it" to get more. Kind of sad. Also, that being the kind of person I am, I'm already thinking ahead to packing up and getting stuff home. So, in a way, the mug cracking sort of helps that issue.

Nonetheless, it ended up being a full day, with me feeling very much still "here." Threatening rain, but I ran out to the East Village to try Sobay-ya, on E. 9th. On the way, checked out this great store window, and realized it was an outpost of Ricky's, coolest, funnest drug store ever. The signs say "These congresspeople did not vote for health care reform" and "Everyone deserves health care." Next time I come to New York, I'm going to stock up on cosmetics here instead of CVS.

Saw these cool buttons and thought of some of my friends. Choose the one most relevant to you.

Soba-ya was great, more noodles, and I just love going out to eat on my own. (Description, links, and pic at blogspot; I don't feel like repeating everything.) Got a little turned around trying to find another cupcake place, Butter Lane, on E. 7th. (Just the name sounds good, right?) That area is rather confusing with the streets angling in, and the numbers criss-crossing and all. Did randomly pass Pomme Frites, that place I've been meaning to go to for years. Funny, there's a chance I might not even eat there this time. Got cupcakes and found the FedEx Kinko's on Astor Place; picked up a couple large boxes thinking I might send some stuff home early. Strolled back through Washington Square Park, always an easy route home.

Lazed around and waited for it to start raining. Paula called and said they and various relations would be converging shortly. Sure enough, Paula, Tony, and Nina, and nieces showed up; three of us ventured down thru SoHo as it started raining in earnest, winding up at Uniqlo. Fortunately Paula and Nina loved the place, since the walk home was drenching wet and windy. Woo hoo! Got beer, ordered pizza, joined by Paula's cousins and Tony's old friend Phil, and had a regular old party. Tony's niece's husband works at MoMA and can get free passes; we discussed the Met and she told me there's a Francis Bacon exhibit there, and I love him. Phil rebuilds guitars at, I think, Rudy's, so I'll mention that to John, and I told Phil about John's music, so...good contacts! Fun, and so much better than going to a crowded restaurant. They headed out around 10. This apartment is great for entertaining.
