“This is real exciting!” burbled Kaylee. “We never had nothin’ like a holiday before!” She grinned around the room at her crewmates, variously engaged in making tea (Inara), hunching over a card game (River and Simon), looking at a screen displaying of hotels on various planets (Wash and Zoe), and picking their teeth with a hunting knife (Jayne). She herself was shaking out some shirts and skirts and considering what to pack.
“Hey, now, that’s not fair,” protested Mal, walking into the kitchen. “You make it sound like I never give you any time off.”
As one, the others in the room turned their heads to look at him, each with their own individualized glare, then went back to their activities. Oblivious, Mal grabbed a biscuit and sat at the table, munching contentedly.
“Well nothing like this, right?” said Kaylee happily. “Ten whole days, we can really do something better than just an overnight on some ol’ planet.”
“Don’t knock it,” growled Jayne, inspecting his blade. “A man can get plenty done in one night.”
Inara gave a gentle groan and drifted to the table, lightly brushing Mal’s shoulder as she passed behind him. “I’m certainly grateful, since it means I can have a nice long stay at Shambala House.” She settled with her cup of tea across from Wash and Zoe. “Still all right to get me in range, Wash?”
“Oh yeah, it’s no problem,” nodded Wash. “It’ll put us on a perfect arc to send you and Book on your way, drop Kaylee on Paquin, and get the rest of us to Artemis. Bolt-hole planet to the stars.”
“Now sweetie, watch your tone. Nothing wrong with going to a place where we don’t gotta worry about being wanted.” Zoe smiled sweetly as Wash gestured at himself. “I know, I know, you’re not wanted, but some of us might be, and we can have more fun someplace out of the line of sight.” At the words “have some fun” she circled her finger at the screen in front of them, which Wash went back to perusing eagerly. “Sure, sure, baby, I’m not complaining. It might not be The Core, but this place has some fine accommodations. ’Spa luxury at affordable prices,’” he read. “Whooee, look at the size of the bathtub in this room!” Zoe leaned forward, eyes closing in a swoon, and he swept in for a kiss.
“Phuh!” Jayne grunted in disgust. “Not my idea of a good time, spending ten days shacking up with the same someone you already know.” He started cleaning his nails with the knife, scowling wolfishly.
“Aw, Jayne, really?” Kaylee asked brightly. “You gonna spend every night with a different stranger?”
It was everyone else’s turn to look disgusted, except Kaylee, who seemed genuinely curious, and River, who gazed wonderingly at Jayne over the Tall Cards clutched in her hand.
“Mebbe,” drawled Jayne, stretching out his legs lazily. “More like, I’ll look up a couple gals I know from before, have me some fun, hunt up some drinking buddies who live local.”
Simon took advantage of River’s distraction, and peeked at a card in the stack. “No different from the usual, then, Jayne? No hiking, museums, taking in a show?”
Jayne snarled at him over the tip of the blade. “Whatchu gonna do then, Mr. Fancypants? You and Crazy Eyes there ‘taking in a show’?”
Simon looked a bit wistful and took the question at face value. “No. I got us some time at one of the Grey Clinics in Sarkat. I’m hoping that some of the tech there will…” His voice faltered as River turned to glare at him. “River, I know you don’t like anything medical, but it could be just the—“ River rolled her eyes, picked up the top card from the stack, and tossed it to the side. “Now play,” she commanded. “No cheating.”
Zoe, who had slid onto Wash’s lap, gave a throaty laugh. “Best not to try to sneak anything by my gal River,” she said, winking at the girl, who was sorting through her cards with a pensive look. “Anyway, I’m grateful that we finally had ourselves a job could pay for ten days of fun.” She wriggled a bit, then turned to give her husband a smooch on the top of his head. She turned back to Kaylee, who was watching the couple benevolently. “How about you, Ms. Kaywinnet? What’s up on Paquin for you?”
Kaylee clutched a folded t-shirt and looked starry-eyed. “Aw, it’ll be shiny. Meeting a girlfriend, we were in school together. She got herself hitched, moved out to Paquin for her husband’s work. We’ll spend some time there with her kids, then shuttle together over to home to see our folks.” Tears started in her eyes. “Miss ‘em something fierce, will be so good to see ‘em all.” She dabbed at her eyes with the t-shirt, and her eyes brightened. “Having a family reunion, all the aunts and uncles and cousins—good food, people’ll play music. It won’t be glamorous, or wild, like you all. But it suits me down to the ground.”
“Sounds like a fine time,” said Wash warmly. “Been years since I’ve seen my folks. Maybe one of these days we’ll circle near to there and I can drop by; I’d like that.” Zoe patted his cheek and wagged her finger. “You’ll do anything to get me closer to The Core, won’t you, husband?” She bent her head to nuzzle him, and they began murmuring to each other.
“And you, Mal?’ Inara turned to him, lips parted over the rim of her teacup. “For your holiday, are you going for grit or glamour?”
Mal looked benevolently at his crew. Good to see everyone so happy. What they worked for, yeah? Earn enough freedom for everyone to have fun the way they wanted to?
“Well, I got some ideas,” he said, standing up and moving toward the coatrack in the corner. “Meet a few people, look for some jobs…like Jayne, though I hate to say it, meet up with some old drinking buddies.” He straightened his long coat on its hanger, smoothing the lapels. “Maybe meet some new people to drink with.” He turned to look at the crew with an impish look. “After all, we are landing on Unification Day.” Amid a chorus of sighs, groans, and chuckles, he turned back to dusting off his brown coat.
