Spent the morning waiting for the cable modem guy who was scheduled to be here between 11-2 and of course arrived at 2:01. Something about New York living--you have to push for your advantage in everything. People don't say right off: Here's what we have to offer, here's what's available, would you like it? They'll say: Well, it's not wireless. That's extra. Then you say "But the management company promised me wireless I said I NEEDED it. And he says, "I have to get the approval from Cindy." Me: "I'll call her right now." Call Cindy, same rigamarole. "Alex told me it would be wireless for my iPhone, can you tell the cable guy?" "That wasn't included." "But I told him I needed it for my iPhone" "Let me talk to the cable guy" etc etc. Got the wireless though. It goes against my naturally shy, retiring personality, but it's kind of fun in a way to know there's more to be had if only you just persist.

Realized it is so great to have a 10th floor apartment, for the breeze and the view. Spend a lot of time looking out the window. It's the CITY! The Big City. With a constant roar and hum, punctuated by sirens and some idiot's old-school car alarm.

Out around 3 pm through SoHo. Cobblestone streets. ACLU kid buttonholed us for awhile. "Do you know what the ACLU is?" Us, amused: "Yes." Him: "A lot of people don't." While we digested that, he gave us his patter, mostly related to their stand on gay rights. Turns out he's from San Francisco as well, going to school at Fordham. Gave him $20 and wandered on to Uniqlo, which Haruko and Joe mentioned. Great store. Simple stuff, plus wild Japanese Tshirts on the side. Lori said it was reminiscent of Esprit in the early days. Bought a lot.

On to Supreme, which Andrew told us is the classic old-school skateboard shop. Skateboard shops are fun.

Headed north and east to Ippudo; Lori had great late-night noodles here before. It was almost pitch-dark in there. I'll tell you, after pounding the pavement and standing around in stores filled with pounding Japanese disco or White-Boy thrash rap (guess which was which), there's nothing like stumbling to your table in a cool black twisty room, sinking down on your groovy leather seat, and awaiting pork buns and ramen served by a charming young woman with a lilting voice. If you have any left, you can't take it with you (I guess they don't stock take-out containers) so next time I'm bringing a tupperware. Their website is cute, worth a click, but all in Japanese.

Circled outward to get a look at the Momofuku restaurants. We'd both been confused by their website, and seeing the pretty restaurants didn't clear up the mystery.

Later Lori posted a pic of the Supreme skateboards at Facebook, and Andrew was all "I want a deck, tell the guy 8.0, he'll know, you don't have to, hahah, or a t-shirt, hah." So I guess we're going back tomorrow.

Yeah, when do you go to the Statue of Liberty? And don't miss the Tenement museum on the lower east side.
