Sep. 29th, 2014 07:43 pmFor a challenge at
gameofcards to do an AU version of a show--so, Firefly as horror. I thought this would be longer, was going to draw out the suspense, but I ran out of time. :-/

“All I’m saying is it’s creepifying, and any of you’d think the same if your bunk was creakin’ and sighin’ all night.” Jayne gestured with his knife around he table at his crewmates. “And I swear it’s gettin’ hard to breathe in there.”
“Ah, having a little panic attack, maybe,” Wash wheedled. “Somehow I wouldn’tve thought it, big strong man like you.”
Jayne scowled. “You better shut it, little man. Stay on my good side, seein’ as I’m the one gonna spell you in the morning.”
Wash gulped his tea and quirked a grin. “Better be sure you don’t spend the night shivering in your bed then. Get your good night’s sleep so’s I don’t have to come wake you.”

“Gorramit, Jayne, this isn’t funny,” growled Wash as he clanged on the hatch to Jayne’s bunk. “Fair’s fair, and I want to get to my nice warm, wifely bed. Blessed hell, where is the man.” He stood in thought for a moment, then, with a grimace and not a little trepidation, he started to open the hatch. “What’s wrong with this shi-nu door,” he muttered, as he struggled with the latch. Putting his weight behind it, he cranked the lever. The hatch blew open with a loud pop, sucking in air from the gangway and causing Wash to jump back with a yell. “What the….” He peered down the hatch, then, with mounting concern, swung down into the bunk. “Ching-wah TSAO duh liou mahng!” he cried out, as he saw Jayne, half flung out of his bed, hands clutching his throat and most decidedly dead.

“Definitely suffocation,” said Simon, as he straightened from his examination of Jayne’s body. “No external trauma, complete oxygen deprivation.” He knew the others were searching Jayne’s bunk, and Kaylee, sobbing, was testing the HVAC system. “Freak occurrence I guess. Weird that he’d been hearing noises, almost like his bunk was….” His voice faded off as he realized he couldn’t think of what to say.
“I told him.” River’s voice came from the doorway to the Surgery. Simon turned to look at her. “I told him I could kill him with my brain.”
Simon’s eyes widened in shock. “River,” he murmured. “No, don’t say that, it wasn’t anything you could have done. It was a malfunction. Something in the ship.”
River looked at him, with widened eyes and a terrifying smile. “River’s gone,” she said. “I am the ship. I am Serenity. And Serenity is very unhappy.”
Simon staggered back against the counter, clutching his throat and gasping for breath, as yells and screams from throughout the ship began filling the air.

River sat at the comm and peacefully set the controls for auto-pilot. She ran her fingers over Wash’s dinosaurs, then rose and, delicately stepping over Wash’s inert body, made her graceful way past the bunks, with their hatches a-kilter, showing glimpses of her lifeless crewmates within; through the dining room where Inara lay sprawled across the dining table; past the door to the engine room, Kaylee fallen across her hammock; and to the shuttle. As she passed through the shuttle door, she patted the hull of the ship. “Now, Serenity. Now you can truly be alone, at peace,” she murmured, as she entered the shuttle, to detach and leave Serenity to sail on, infinitely, through the Black.
