Thursday was another rainy day, so I ate my Crumbs croissant for breakfast and Two Boots pizza for lunch. Headed out around 5 pm to meet Jane for the Rockin' the River cruise! A line to Port Authority Bus Terminal, then walked four blocks in the gloppy rain to Pier 83. I can see why too much rain drives people mad in the big city; all the puddles and splashing and trying to avoid other people's umbrellas. Still, so great to have some time with Jane--we exchanged "dating" stories while we waited to get on the boat, and after we had grabbed our seats, set up so close to the "stage" with life vests in the grid above. The concert was excellent, and Joan Osborne, who I had not really followed before, was wonderful. I have a major crush on her now. I wrote about it a bit at TWOP Buffy. Also cool to be in a crowd of people around our own age; one thing about Bleecker Street is it is relentlessly young. Jane and I were speculating on Joan's age, since she looks like she's not trying to look young, if you know what I mean. We guessed 48, and later I saw on Wikipedia that she is 47. So, good for her. Plus, there was this quote from her there:

"I definitely have had far more encounters with men, but I’ve had a few erotic encounters with women. I always kind of thought of myself as straight, but then there were exceptions to that of women who I thought were particularly sexy and attractive and they felt the same about me. So I thought ‘Why not?’ I will say that the women I’ve been attracted to have been on the more voluptuous side of the curve." As I said at TWOP, drat! Hopes raised and dashed in a single paragraph!

Big plus: the boat cruised around the lower part of the island, right by Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and under the Brooklyn Bridge, so I got to SIGHT-SEE all those up close. Though it felt a little weird to be listening to the rock tape in between sets while looking at Ellis Island; didn't seem right somehow. And the Statue of Liberty was pretty awe-inspiring in real life. I didn't expect that.

After, we roamed up 9th Avenue through Restaurant Row, and ended up at Columbus Circle, which is so bright and upbeat. Shopped at the Whole Foods, where I'd been before and noticed that it was a crazy singles-type hangout on a Friday night. This time it was quiet, but it was 10 pm, after all. Subwayed back downtown, strolled home, and felt like quite the city dweller.

Today, headed out around 1 to meet Gary at the Ziegfield Theater for Harry Potter. Actually found the Rockefeller Center concourse that James had mentioned so mysteriously, simply by following signs out of the subway station that said "concourse." It's cool down there! kind of reminiscent of the underground downtown area of Toronto. Emerged at the Time-Life building, Gary and I went over to 9th for lunch at the Eatery. Good food, nice modern place, and service by really good looking waiters who I think are probably theater types, dancers is my guess. Very willowy with great butts, not that I was looking.

The Ziegfield theater is very cool, old-style, with chandeliers and red velvet walls. Loved the movie. And took a new subway line, the #1, landing at the Christopher Street station. Got a Pinkberry Coconut yogurt near the apartment for $5. Damn, frozen yogurt is expensive in this town.

Sadly, it seems my iPhone camera is not working, so none of the many (no doubt blurry) pictures I took of this foray came out. I'm disappointed because I had some great ones of Gary with the theater district in the background, but I'm also a little relieved not to be uploading tons of pictures right now.

Tomorrow, Atlantic City with Melissa!

I can't believe I've been here two weeks already. I'm starting to worry a little bit that I won't be ready to leave when it's time.
