"What?" It was a familiar reaction from throughout their time together, with Happy catching Toby gazing at her, moony-eyed, but this time it came without the defensive edge of their early days. She looked at him thoughtfully as she set down the wrench on the workbench where she was sitting.
Toby's eyes, yes, moony, lifted from her pregnant belly to her face, his expression softening even further.
"Just lookin'," he said with a proud smile. But as he continued to gaze, his eyes flicked back to her protruding midsection, and she caught a glimmer of unease. Funny how someone who had made--and lost--a fortune relying on his poker face could be so so easy to read.
"What?" she asked again, this time with a tone of genuine inquiry.
"Just....well, I mean, I know we will have fantastic kids. How could we not. Most awesome parents ever, am I right?" He spread his arms and put on his confident swagger. "But...I can't stop worrying." His arms dropped and he looked pensive.
"What?" Now there was the old defensive edge. And to match, her arms curved around her body as if in protection.
"Well, look at me. What if one of them turns out to be addicted to gambling?"
"Or they could be a mechanical genius."
"Or they could be an inveterate thrill-seeker."
"Or they could be a dedicated problem-solver."
"Or they could be freaked out about intimacy."
"Or they could really care about helping people."
"OR..." With each "or" he had scooted the office chair closer to her, his brow furrowed and his mouth agape. She put up a hand then put her finger to her lips.
"Shhhh. Hush now." She carefully rose from her seat and slipped onto his lap. "Let's go back to 'most awesome parents ever,' babe," she whispered.
She felt him relax as he looked again into her eyes. "Yeah? YEAH!" Again the arms raised, the triumphant swagger, and she held on for dear life as they both broke into laughter.
