At MedAcad they called it "the zone." Time warps, slows to a liquid pace. The world turns blue, pulsating. The noise a dull throb. You with crystal clarity, thoughts directing actions. Your lips form words, can't hear your own voice. But you see the response; others move at your command. Suddenly, another warp; your body slows, the world speeds up. Heart grips, stomach heaves. Dumped back into reality. Screaming sounds, your hands shift…

Instantly, the alarms stop. Young doctor standing across from you, eyes wide. Another patient saved. Your focus shifts. River, Jayne, wheelchair. Ariel. Must get on with it.

I so loved Ariel and more than that, I loved Simon in Ariel. It was the first time he seemed really clever and calculating, brilliant and capable, and not just as a surgeon. In this scene and cap, you can see how River is so proud of her brother, and everything Simon does he does for her. It's a great relationship and your fic really brings that out.

What an amazing piece - it's like a slow-motion photograph, if that makes any sense. It captures the hyper-awareness of details and the dreamlike blur of surroundings that I imagine real doctors must feel in an emergency. I was especially struck by the detail of speaking without hearing the words, only seeing their effects in the reactions of others. Beautiful. And the somewhat choppy style of incomplete sentences fits the subject perfectly, as Simon readjusts his thoughts and shifts between worlds, jobs, and persona, giving himself mental commands to get back to the heist at hand :)

Oh, thank you. Heh, the choppiness is a little due to my effort to keep to 100 words. It's an interesting form of (self)discipline.

Glad you found us over here! I'm also looking forward to reading more of your work. Firefly is such fun to write for. The characters and situations are so vivid, even though we only knew them for a short period of time...
