Book Casting for Fandomverse

Fun challenge--to cast a movie from a favorite book. It may seem like I'm having a lark, but I'm quite serious with this casting, as it is one of my most favorite books, a fantastic English mystery with nobility, consulting detectives, women academics, romance, and spite. Check it out!



"Gaudy Night (1935) is a mystery novel by Dorothy L. Sayers, the tenth in her popular series about aristocratic sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey, and the third featuring crime writer Harriet Vane. The dons of Harriet Vane's alma mater, the all-female Shrewsbury College, have invited her to attend the annual 'Gaudy' celebrations. However, the mood turns sour when a lunatic begins a series of malicious pranks. Desperate to avoid a possible murder in college, Harriet asks her old friend Wimsey to investigate." (from Wikipedia.)

Is this like a cross between Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie? I might check it out.

Yes it is such a cross, and you should try it. I'll send you the book if I can find it. It's rather more erudite than Christie, but has some awesome elements.

Amanda Abbington's an interesting choice for Harriet Vane. Doesn't Peter say somewhere that she has a beautiful voice? -- Amanda does have a distinctive voice. And I like Helena Bonham-Carter as Annie -- she has the range!

Well, a confession--I put Amanda in all my recasts, whether a Rupert Giles or a Pushing Daisies spinoff. It was fun to think of Helena in that role. The problem was finding the right pictures to show her closer to being Annie. Thanks for commenting!

I haven't read Gaudy night in years. I'll have to find it an re read. It sticks in my memory because it reminded me of my own women's college. We had many formal academic traditions.

Oh it's a wonderful book that bears re-reading. Love hearing that it has some familiar elements to some people, as it bears no resemblance to my own college years! :)

Thanks, and I wonder if you'd like the book. On the plus side for you, it's quite erudite, and if you like Sherlock... on the negative side, no mythological stuff, or maybe just a few literary references here and there....

This is probably the best of all, but I wouldn't read it first...maybe start with the first Harriet Vane...is it called Strong Poison? :)
